Where Do We Dive?
We dive primarily in Monterey, CA. But we will be doing trip to other places such as Santa Barabara and San Diego
When Do We Dive?
The officers (and whomever else wants to participate) discuss the diving plans for the weekend and an email it sent out Tues or Weds. Usually, we dive Saturday or Sunday mornings, meeting around 8am.
Email Ross at rfrench@scu.edu if you'd like to be added to the mailing list.
How Much does it cost?
As long as you're a certified diver, the only costs are gas money and rental gear ($0-$40 depending on what you own and what we have in our donation bin).
What Do We See?
The Monterey Canyon is one the most diverse eco-systems in the world. On any given dive we see much of the flora and fauna that's on exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Everything from large Purple-Striped Jellies and huge schools of Pacific Sardine to Wolf Eels, Sting Rays and Octopus. And there's always plenty of kelp!
Isn't It Cold And Murky?
The water temperature ranges from the low 40s during the coldest part of the winter up into the mid 60s during summer. With a proper-fitting wetsuit you'll end your day just as warm as most other places. Visibility varies from 100' to near zero, but with a little practice we can usually find 15-30' Vis. Occasionally, we're lucky enough to be in the water on those 100+' days.
What Kind Of Diving Do We Do?
All of our dives are recreational (PADI guidelines) and are mellow, social activites. We break our diving up into 3 categories: Shore diving, Boat diving, and Night diving.
Shore Diving sites:
Breakwater
Hidden Beach (or the rather overlooked beach)
Macabee
Lovers Cove
Otter Cove
Still Water Cove
Butterfly House
Copper Roof
Stewarts Cove
Monastery
Point Lobos
Boat Diving
The Club dives with the Cypress Charters boats 3-6 times a year. The Cypress is an excellent dive boat with a great crew. The club also has access to a private boat, The Calico Turtle, which we take out about every other weekend. It takes 4-6 divers, but is open to advanced divers only. We typically pick from the following sites: Outer Macabee
Hopkins Deep Reef
Aquarium Intakes
Outer Lovers
Eric's Pinnacle
Aumentos Reef
Chase Reef
Still Water Cove
Mono Lobo Wall
Arches
The Pinnacles
Any Place people know how to get to!
Night Diving
We do Night Dives every Thursday night conditions permitting. . You'll need to bring you own mask, snorkel, fins, boots, gloves and a light (but you need that for anything we do). We usually do our night dives at Breakwater since it's easy to navigate and has a mellow entry/exit. It's a great place to try your first night dive because it's shallow and well lit, but even advanced divers can keep themselves entertained with Halibut, Sting Rays, Octopus, and all kinds of cool stuff.
What about trips to warmer water?
The club has plans to go to Bonaire 2009! Email the management if you'd like to join us-- rfrench@scu.edu
